Psychoanalytic Therapy in San Francisco

A place to speak your life.

Get in Touch

Maybe you're struggling with anxiety that won't turn off, depression that makes everything empty, heartbreak or burnout from pushing yourself too hard. Maybe it's quieter: a persistent sense that your successes are hollow, or that life went wrong somewhere along the line. Often what makes life unbearable is carrying things you've never spoken aloud to anyone, sometimes not even yourself.

Approach

Whether you're struggling with anxiety, burnout, impostor syndrome or a persistent sense of emptiness, I provide psychoanalytic therapy for professionals, creatives, and innovators in San Francisco and throughout California. Working in the Lacanian and Existential traditions, therapy sessions focus on what's troubling you, what you want, your dreams and what you're avoiding. I listen for patterns, ways you make the same compromises, repeat the same relationships or feel the same dread even as circumstances change.

This work confronts you with the gap between what you say you want and what you actually do. Between the life you've built and a life that feels real. It's not about fixing symptoms or teaching coping skills. It's about understanding why you keep choosing what doesn't satisfy you, why anxiety persists despite your efforts, why success brings emptiness instead of fulfillment.

What emerges in psychoanalytic therapy can be challenging: contradictions you'd rather not see, desires you disavowed years ago, truths that would require you to change how you live. This isn't comfortable work. But it leads to clarity about who you are and what you actually want beyond what you think you should.

About

Stephen Mosblech, LMFT - Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in San Francisco providing psychoanalytic therapy for anxiety, depression, and burnout

I'm Stephen Mosblech, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #154069) and Candidate Psychoanalyst providing therapy for anxiety, burnout and depression to clients throughout California via secure telehealth. I specialize in working with innovators and high-achieving professionals who are dealing with anxiety, burnout, existential questions about meaning and purpose, fear of success, fear of failure, and the unique pressures of working in performance-driven fields.

My psychoanalytic approach combines rigorous training in Lacanian and Existential traditions at the California Institute of Integral Studies (MA in Clinical Psychology), Brown University, and advanced psychoanalytic institutes across California, New York and Europe. In 2022, I received a Scholar Award from Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association for research on unconscious processes.

I've spent a decade teaching meditation internationally, including at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, and completed extended retreats at monasteries in Northern India, Myanmar, and Thailand. This contemplative training shapes my therapy practice, bringing both rigor and spaciousness to our work together. Prior to that I worked in avant-garde scenes in New York, Paris and Berlin exploring frontiers of consciousness through art creation.

In addition to my clinical work, I am the Founder & Director of the Association for the Clinic of the Future, a working group that engages contemporary issues in psychoanalysis, including impacts of AI proliferation on subjectivity and the unfolding global ecological crisis. I also serve as a Mentor for the American Psychological Association (Division 39), the Massachusetts Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology, and the San Francisco chapter of the California Association for Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), where I support the training of early career clinicians.

We will discuss how psychoanalytic treatment works and I will invite you to tell me what you want from therapy at this moment in your life.

How do I schedule a first session? +

Email me, call me directly or book an appointment via my Calendar. We will proceed with a short consultation call, where I can get more context about your needs for therapy and determine if we will be a good fit for this work.

How often will we meet? +

At least once a week. Deep change requires real consistency. Some clients decide for 2+ sessions a week in order to deepen the process.

Do you offer online sessions? +

Yes, I provide HIPAA compliant virtual therapy throughout the state of California.

What are your fees? +

My fee is $250 for a 50 minute session. At this point I do not accept insurance but can provide you with a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.

What's the difference between psychoanalytic therapy and other types of therapy? +

Psychoanalytic therapy addresses the primary causes of your suffering. By attending to unconscious forces impacting your thoughts and behaviors, we start a process of deep transformation that can lead to permanent changes in your capacity for love, work and enjoyment.
